In the cool autumn, by the north bank of the Xiangjiang River, I stand alone on the Orange Island.
See the myriad mountains turn red, the layers of woods dyed with color; the clear green river, many boats compete in sail.
The eagle strikes the air, the fisher swims in the shallow water, all creatures contend for freedom in the frosty sky .
Lost in thought, I ask the boundless universe: who decides the rise and fall of the earth?
I bring back my companions who used to come here for a stroll, recall those bygone years of extraordinary viciss itudes.
Just when our youthful friends were at their prime, spirited and gallant; we discussed state affairs, wrote invigorating words to criticize what was wrong and praise what was right.
We looked down upon those petty warlords, officials and dignitaries.
